Getting Your License Back After Suspension or Revocation

In Florida, if your driver's license has been suspended due to a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) offense, you will need to take certain steps to reinstate it.

Here are the general steps you may need to take:

  • Complete any court-ordered requirements: If you were convicted of a DWI, you may have been required to complete certain penalties or requirements as part of your sentence. These may include fines, community service, or alcohol education programs. Make sure you have completed all of these before attempting to reinstate your license.

  • Attend a DUI school: If your license was suspended due to a DWI conviction, you may be required to attend a DUI school. This school will provide you with education about the dangers of drunk driving and may also include counseling or therapy. You will need to complete the required hours of the program and receive a certificate of completion.

  • Obtain an FR-44: In Florida, if your license was suspended due to a DWI, you will need to obtain an FR-44 form. This form is a proof of insurance that shows you have the required amount of liability coverage. You will need to maintain this insurance for at least three years.

  • Pay any fees: There may be reinstatement fees associated with getting your license back after a DWI suspension. Make sure you have the money to pay these fees, which can vary depending on the length of your suspension and other factors.

  • Apply for reinstatement: Once you have completed all of the requirements and obtained an FR-44 form, you can apply to have your license reinstated. You can do this online or in person at a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) office. You will need to provide all required documentation, pay any fees, and pass any necessary exams.

A suspended license costs $45 to reinstate. If there were other violations that took place, you will have additional fees to pay. Getting your Sarasota driver's license back is not a sure bet—you may need to make a case to a judge for getting your driving privileges back. I can help. I have many years of experience defending clients against a wide range of criminal charges, and my strong trial and negotiation abilities are particularly useful when helping clients contest a license suspension or revocation.

You will need to go to court before reinstating your driving privileges if you failed to:

  • Pay a fine
  • Appear in court for a different traffic summons
  • Comply with a summons
  • Attend or complete traffic school

Proving your case to a judge can be tough. I can walk you through what to expect when applying for reinstatement of your driving privileges.
